DEREK HERNIMAN - PROFILE
| 1961-86 |
Resided
on the family farm 'Libbaton',
High Bickington ,
schooled at Chulmleigh,
returned to work on the
farm, attained a
Craftsman Certificate of
Agriculture at Bicton
College |
| 1986 |
I
married my wife, Jenny,
and bought a house in
High Bickington village |
| 1987-95 |
On my
father's retirement I
started work on the
North Devon Link Road as
a fence erector for
Associated Asphalt - a
firm based in
Henley-on-Thames. After
completion of the Link
Road I stayed with the
firm, eventually taking
on the responsibilities
of foreman. |
| 1995-97 |
Still
with Associated Asphalt,
the heavy work started
to affect my limbs.
After consulting a
specialist at N.D.D.H. I
was diagnosed as having
rheumatoid arthritis. On
doctor's advice I left
the firm in 1997 |
| 1997 |
Enrolled
at St Loyes College,
Exeter retraining in
hand-crafted furniture.
I soon found my previous
practical abilities
could be channeled into
the skills needed to
produce fine
hand-crafted furniture.
I finished the set
course work ahead of
schedule, leaving time
to produce a piano
stool, an oak dresser, a
coffee table, a
grandfather clock and a
rocking chair. |
| 1998 |
After
leaving college with a
Diploma in Hand Crafted
Furniture, I adapted a
workshop near my home in
High Bickington where I
now work, producing
various pieces of
furniture for customers
in all kinds of
hardwoods and pine. |
